Three Wednesday nights · Halifax · From Dukes

Halifax is the map. The night is yours.

One hour. A map of the streets, 20+ hidden checkpoints, and your phone does the scoring. Find as many as you can and get back before the clock runs out.

The 2026 series

Three rounds. Three weeks apart.

Every round starts and finishes at Dukes, 16-18 Market Arcade, Halifax, with a new map and new checkpoints each time. Do one, or do all three and go for the series title. Registration from 18:30, start any time between 18:45 and 19:15, and you have 60 minutes from your own start.

How it works

No kites. No punching. Just go.

  1. Download the appGet the free iOrienteering app before you come, and charge your phone. How to set it up
  2. Grab the mapYou get the map at registration. Plan as long as you like, the clock only starts when you cross the start.
  3. Hunt the checkpointsEach checkpoint is a spot on the map, not a flag. Get within about 5 metres and the app collects the points for you.
  4. Beat the clockBack inside 60 minutes. Late costs 2 points a minute, and over 20 minutes late you lose the lot.

On foot

Run it, jog it, walk it. Everyone scores on the same map. Some checkpoints are worth more than others, so the planning is half the fun.

Bring your mates

Everyone enters on their own, then run together if you like. Can't read a map? Go round with a friend, there is always someone looking for company.

Prizes every round

Top woman and top man on the night. Points carry over to the overall series table, plus King and Queen of the Hill on a Strava segment between checkpoints.

The app

Get iOrienteering. It's free.

  1. Install it at homeTap your phone's button above, or search "iOrienteering" in the App Store or Google Play. Install it before the night: venue signal can be patchy.
  2. Open it onceWhen it asks to use your location, say yes ("While using the app" is fine). That is how it knows you have reached a checkpoint.
  3. Charge your phoneAn hour of GPS uses battery. Come fully charged, and bring a power bank if your phone is old.
  4. We do the restAt registration we load the night's course onto your phone with you and show you how it works. No account to set up before you come.
Prices

Do the whole series and save.

What to bring

Questions

Before you ask.

I can't read a map. Can I still do it?

Yes. The maps are simple street maps, and the app shows where you are. Plenty of people go round with a friend for exactly this reason: just enter separately and run together.

Is there a set route?

No. You choose where to go and in what order. Some checkpoints are worth more than others, so the planning is half the fun.

How old do I need to be?

16 or over on the night.

What if I have no phone signal?

The app keeps your score on the phone and sends it when you are back in signal. Nothing is lost.

Where are the full terms?

Read the terms of entry and our privacy notice.

Is it a race?

It is whatever you want it to be. Some people go flat out for the title; plenty walk round with friends and enjoy the town after dark.

Since 2014

Back after dark.

The Urban Night Series started as Friday-night bike orienteering round Huddersfield and Holmfirth in 2014, then grew into run-or-bike score events round Halifax, Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge and Dewsbury, with club nights and an Inter Club Champs at Dukes. Now it is back where it finished, under Organic Adventure.
